Schaffner Group strengthens its presence in North America
Schaffner strengthens its position in the USA and as global partner in the international market for power electronics systems with the acquisition of dry-type transformer operations of American manufacturer MTC Transformers. In future Schaffner customers in North America will benefit from locally developed and manufactured transformers and reactors.
From 1 September 2011 Schaffner Group takes over the dry-type transformers operations of American transformer manufacturer MTC Transformers. Under the transaction, Schaffner is acquiring MTC Transformer's Wytheville production site, Virginia (USA) and Roanoke based sales office, North Carolina (USA), as well as the well-established MTC Transfomers brand. The acquisition will strengthen the Schaffner Group’s market position in North America and add a production site in the USA to its international manufacturing organization which already consists of production centers in China, Germany, Thailand and Hungary.
Founded in 1985 MTC Transformers, Inc. specializes in the development, manufacturing and maintenance of transformers and other magnetics. Its Wytheville operations are focusing on dry-type transformers for medium-voltage applications in the rail technology, renewable energies and energy-efficient drive systems sectors. In addition, it has a powerful service and support organisation in the US.
With the acquisition Schaffner further expands its technological competence in the area of Power Magnetics in order to assist customers globally with technical support, customer service, development and manufacturing. In future particularly customers in North America will benefit from the advantages of locally developed and manufactured products, like e.g. from shorter transport routes and delivery times.
The product range of MTC Transformers encompasses transformers and reactors in dry construction in the power range up to 12 MVA for applications in the low- and medium voltage range up to 35 kV. A special sealing technology for windings as well as high-quality mechanical designs enable the development and manufacturing of unique solutions which can be seamlessly integrated into power electronic systems and which even under rough conditions work reliably over decades.
